Which Wilcoxon test is suitable for paired data?

By Daniel Moore

Which Wilcoxon test is suitable for paired data?

The paired samples Wilcoxon test (also known as Wilcoxon signed-rank test) is a non-parametric alternative to paired t-test used to compare paired data. It’s used when your data are not normally distributed.

When Should a Wilcoxon matched pairs signed rank test be used?

We also assume that the paired differences all have the same mean (= median). If you are testing the null hypothesis that the Hodges-Lehmann estimate of the median difference is zero, then the assumption of symmetry is not required.

What is the difference between paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test?

Paired t-test: Requires that difference scores are normally distributed, and, therefore are of at least interval scale strength. Tests hypothesis that mean difference = constant (typically, zero). Wilcoxon test: Requires that difference scores are at least ordinal strength, and therefore may be converted to ranks.

What is the Wilcoxon signed rank test and when do you use it?

Wilcoxon rank-sum test is used to compare two independent samples, while Wilcoxon signed-rank test is used to compare two related samples, matched samples, or to conduct a paired difference test of repeated measurements on a single sample to assess whether their population mean ranks differ.

When to use a Mann-Whitney U test?

The Mann-Whitney U test is used to compare whether there is a difference in the dependent variable for two independent groups. It compares whether the distribution of the dependent variable is the same for the two groups and therefore from the same population.

How do you explain Wilcoxon signed rank test?

The Wilcoxon signed rank test compares your sample median against a hypothetical median. The Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test computes the difference between each set of matched pairs, then follows the same procedure as the signed rank test to compare the sample against some median.

How does the Wilcoxon signed rank test work?

What is a paired sample test?

The Paired Samples t Test compares the means of two measurements taken from the same individual, object, or related units. These “paired” measurements can represent things like: A measurement taken at two different times (e.g., pre-test and post-test score with an intervention administered between the two time points)
