What type of character is Brabantio?

Brabantio as a character is every bit the overprotective father, but in some ways, he represents the pull of youth on Desdemona as well. He doesn’t seem to recognize her capacity for entering into a mature relationship with a man, and keeps her trapped in perpetual childhood.

Is Brabantio rich?

Desdemona’s father, Brabantio, is a rich and important Venetian politician. He likes Othello and invites him to visit his house a lot—but he never expected Othello to “steal” his daughter.

How is Brabantio described?

He is a Venetian senator and the father of Desdemona. He has entertained Othello in his home countless times before the play opens, thus giving Othello and Desdemona opportunity to fall in love.

Gratiano then announces that it’s a good thing Desdemona’s dad, Brabantio, died of heartbreak over her wedding to Othello, because he really wouldn’t have survived this traumatic event. Othello, furious, tries to stab Iago, but Iago avoids him, and instead stabs his wife to death (seemingly), and runs out.

Does Brabantio hate Othello?

Brabantio doesn’t want Desdemona to marry Othello because he is racist. In this Shakespearean world, Othello could be applauded for his great triumphs at war but he certainly couldn’t marry a white man’s daughter. In fact, Brabantio is so shocked by his daughter’s choice that he accuses Othello of bewitching her.
