What is Periconitis?
Pericoronitis is swelling and infection of the gum tissue around the wisdom teeth, the third and final set of molars that usually appear in your late teens or early 20s.
Is Pericoronitis serious?
While rare, a person experiencing pericoronitis can develop a life-threatening complication called Ludwig’s angina, in which the infection spreads into their head and neck. An infection that spreads to the bloodstream, otherwise known as sepsis, is also a rare, life-threatening complication.
Is an Operculectomy painful?
Operculectomy is a relatively simple and safe procedure with good success rates. Patients usually achieve immediate relief from pain and discomfort. The further buildup of plaque or tartar is also prevented. Patients will also find it easier to keep this area of the mouth clean.
How do you clean Operculum?
Use a sulcabrush (which is similar to a manual toothbrush but has 1/3rd of the bristles) to access underneath the flap of gum to clean out food debris. Use a CDA approved mouthwash at least once a day to help reduce the bacteria in the area. Use a monojet to squirt mouthwash under the flap of gum.
What is Transalveolar extraction?
A moderate amount of buccal bone is removed to expose the tooth for sectioning. The roots are sectioned into two buccal roots and a single palatal root. Next, the roots are luxated with a straight elevator and delivered with Cryer elevators, according to the preference of the surgeon.
What is a molar extraction?
A tooth extraction is the permanent removal of a tooth from its socket and may be done manually using forceps or surgically. Extraction is recommended when the tooth cannot be saved with other treatments such as root canal treatment and to prevent infection from spreading to other areas of your mouth.

Can I treat pericoronitis at home?
Sometimes, mild symptoms of pericoronitis can be treated at home through meticulous oral hygiene without the use of antibiotics. Thorough and gentle brushing of the area with a small-headed toothbrush may help to break up the plaque or food that is trapped.
