What is PAPVC in cardiology?

By Sophia Carter

What is PAPVC in cardiology?

Background. Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) is a rare congenital cardiac defect. As the name suggests, in PAPVC, the blood flow from a few of the pulmonary veins return to the right atrium instead of the left atrium. Usually, a single pulmonary vein is anomalous.

What is PAPVC repair?

Surgical correction of PAPVC varies according to the type of underlying anomaly, however the basic principle remains the segregtion of systemic and pulmonary circulation either by communicating the anomalous pulmonary vein to the left atrium directly or indirectly rerouting through baffle into left atrium.

What is the warden technique?

The Warden procedure transfers the SVC to the RA appendage, while redirecting an anomalous pulmonary venous flow to the left atrium by using a single patch. This procedure essentially prevents the anatomical obstruction of the intracardiac blood flow.

What is Tapvd?

Total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (TAPVD) is a rare form of congenital heart disease where all four pulmonary veins drain to the systemic venous circulation. A term infant was found to have low oxygen saturations on the neonatal check and he was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.

How is Papvr diagnosed?

Echocardiography is the most frequently used method for an initial diagnosis of PAPVR. Increasingly, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is being used for further delineation of the abnormalities, particularly if surgical intervention is being considered.

What are the symptoms of partial anomalous pulmonary venous return?

In partial anomalous venous return (PAPVR), if only one vein is affected, there are usually no symptoms. If two veins from the same side are affected, symptoms of shortness of breath with exertion and low stamina may occur during childhood. The symptoms are usually mild and may not ever occur.

What are the symptoms of Papvr?

What are the symptoms of Papvr in adults?

Although many patients with PAPVR are asymptomatic, the condition may be detected during a routine physical examination when patients are noted to have a heart murmur and undergo echocardiogram. Older patients may be symptomatic with symptoms of shortness of breath, arrhythmias, chest pain, and heart failure.

What is a Papvr condition?

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) is a rare heart defect that’s present at birth (congenital heart defect). This condition may also be called partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC).

What does Hlhs stand for?

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. As the baby develops during pregnancy, the left side of the heart does not form correctly. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is one type of congenital heart defect. Congenital means present at birth.

What causes Tapvd?

In many cases, we don’t know what causes TAPVR. It occurs because of abnormal development of the heart’s pulmonary veins during early fetal growth. Some congenital heart defects may have a genetic link, causing heart problems to occur more often in certain families.

How common is TAPVR?

Total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR) is a rare congenital heart malformation that accounts for 1% to 3% of all congenital heart anomalies [1].
