What happened Beeston Castle?

Henry III seized the castle in 1237 and it remained in royal ownership until the 16th century. In the Civil War it withstood a long siege in 1644–5, before being surrendered by the Royalists and partially demolished.

To protect his land, his family, and also to show his power, Earl Ranulf decided to build a mighty castle. And so Beeston was born. The design of Beeston Castle, it’s alleged, was inspired by the fortresses and castles that Earl Ranulf had encountered during the crusades.

You don’t need to book your ticket in advance, but you will always get the best price and guaranteed entry by booking online ahead of your visit. If you are a Member and wish to book, your ticket is still free.

Is Beeston Castle free?

As English Heritage members we were keen to visit Beeston Castle. When we did we were glad our entrance fee was free as this venue represents extremely poor value. Entry is £7 for an adult. Despite being members, we had to pay £2.50 to park & show proof of parking in the ticket office which we found a little odd.
