What does extruded base mean?

By Isabella Ramos

What does extruded base mean?

An Extruded Base Is A Carefree Base Made by melting down polyethylene (a dense, abrasion resistant thermoplastic with low friction properties) pellets and then applying pressure, extruded bases are slower, hold less wax, and are less abrasion resistant than sintered bases.

Do you need to wax extruded base?

Waxing an extruded base won’t make as much difference as waxing a sintered base will. Therefore it is not necessary to wax as often. So if you want to wax less often and still maintain a reasonable speed of base then extruded is the way to go.

What is the base of a snowboard?

Polyethylene is the main and often sole ingredient that snowboards bases are made from. The water-repellent, highly porous and abrasion-resistant attributes of the material make it perfect for sliding on snow. Molecular mass and density of the polyethylene determine the performance of the base.

What is a sintered ski base?

Sintered bases are made up of tiny ground up pellets of p-tex that are crushed and put back together under high temperatures. This process creates a much stronger molecular mass and will absorb wax and bond better to new p-tex for stronger repairs.

Can you PTEX a sintered base?

Sintered is more expensive because it’s more durable, it glides better and it holds wax better. All p-tex repairs are done with extruded p-tex because it’s not possible to use sintered p-tex unless you own your own snowboard factory with some very expensive tools.

What does a dry snowboard look like?

Dry areas look like small white lines or like an allover white haze. You will generally have a good healthy board if you can get it waxed every 3-4 times you ride.

What is the difference between sintered and extruded base?

Sintered bases will require more maintenance than an extruded base and are more expensive to repair. Sintered bases will hold wax better than an extruded base but an extruded base requires waxing less often. Waxing both bases will help ensure the base stays in a good condition for longer and will influence its speed.

What is the fastest snowboard base?

Pathron Carbon Gold
Fast. The Pathron Carbon Gold is billed as having the fastest snowboard base in production.

What is a TNT base?

The TNT base is Lib-Tech’s fastest unwaxed base. The benefits of this base basically include a lower maintenance base that doesn’t require frequent waxing.

Is a snowboard base porous?

The base does not have any gaps between the old pellets and is therefore completely non-porous. This means that it is a lot harder to get wax to penetrate the base and will mean an extruded base may be that bit slower than a sintered base.
