How long does EKOS procedure take?

By Jessica Cortez

How long does EKOS procedure take?

The procedure takes 10 minutes after which the patient goes to ICU – 12 hours for a single pulmonary embolism and 24 hours for a patient with blood clots in both lungs. The procedure cuts the length of stay in half – two to three days on average.

How does EKOS catheter work?

How does EKOS® Catheter work? The EKOS EkoSonic® Endovascular System generates ultrasonic energy waves which emit high frequency, low power ultrasound at the treatment zone. The ultrasound emanates radially into and through blood, thrombus, or tissue surrounding the treatment zone, within the patient’s vasculature.

How long does an EKOS catheter stay in?

This will prevent any issues with the delivery of medication and ultrasound waves. The tubes will remain in place for at least 12 hours or until the medication delivery is complete. After the tubes are removed, your activity will slowly increase.

When do you use EKOS?

The EKOS catheter is comprised of two parts: the Infusion catheter and the ultrasonic core. EKOS was the first interventional device indicated for the treatment of pulmonary embolism. EKOS is used for the infusion of physician-specific fluids, including thrombolytics, into the peripheral vasculature.

What does Ekos mean?

Ekosonic Endovascular System (EKOS), a form of catheter-directed pharmacomechanical thrombolysis, has been used to treat submassive and massive pulmonary emboli.

What is catheter-directed thrombolysis?

Catheter-directed thrombolysis is a minimally invasive treatment that dissolves abnormal blood clots in blood vessels to help improve blood flow and prevent damage to tissues and organs.

What is Eko treatment?

EKOS therapy is a minimally invasive system for dissolving thrombus. The ultrasonic core generates an acoustic field which greatly accelerates lytic dispersion by driving the drug deeper into the clot and unwinding the fibrin to expose plasminogen receptor sites.
