State Percentile Rank: The State Percentile Rank compares your child’s scale score to the scale scores of the rest of the students in the State at the same grade level who took the NYSESLAT this year.
What happens if you pass the Nyseslat?
When students perform at the proficient level, they are considered to have “passed” the NYSESLAT. They stop taking the test and no longer receive state funding for services, though parents may opt to keep them in ESL or bilingual classes, and they are labeled “former ELLs”.

How long is the Nyseslat test?
The written portion of the test is administered over three separate days. In Kindergarten, it is estimated that the written portion will take students between 90 to 105 minutes to complete. In grades 1 through 12, it is estimated that the written portion could take students between 105 and 165 minutes to complete.

We SUPPORT the request to waive the NYSESLAT for students who are learning remotely, but we believe this waiver request does not go far enough. We call for a NYSESLAT waiver that extends to all ENL learners, regardless of their remote/hybrid/in-person status.
Is the Nyseslat 2021 Cancelled?
At this time, no final decision regarding the 2021 NYSESLAT has been made. Keeping this in mind, we are sharing the following information to prepare should it be deemed feasible to proceed with the spring 2021 test administrations in person in schools throughout the State.
Who can administer Nyseslat?
Schools may choose to test students who are receiving hybrid instruction on the days that they are ordinarily attending school in person. Only qualified personnel (certified teachers or administrators) with special training in administering the NYSESLAT should administer the NYSESLAT.
