How do I reset my cam chain tensioner?

By Owen Barnes

How do I reset my cam chain tensioner?

Use a straight slot screwdriver small enough to insert into the hole and engage the mechanism. Turn it clockwise to retract the plunger. If the mechanism is working properly, as soon as you remove the screwdriver, the plunger should spring out again automatically. You should not be able to push the plunger in by hand.

How do you adjust timing chain?

Rotate the eccentric to tighten or loosen the timing chain. The timing chain should be loose enough to prevent binding and tight enough to keep from falling off. The chain should move about 1/2″ for the front and 1/4″ for the rear without using force.

How do you know if your cam chain tensioner is bad?

Common signs of a faulty timing chain include engine misfires, metal shavings found in the oil, and rattling sounds from the engine while idling.

How do you know if your timing chain tensioner is bad?

When a timing belt tensioner fails, it can result in a number of different symptoms.

  1. Symptom 1: Squealing, rattling, or chirping.
  2. Symptom 2: Knocking or slapping.
  3. Symptom 3: Check engine light illuminated.
  4. Materials Needed.
  5. Step 1: Park your vehicle and turn off the engine.

How does an automatic cam chain tensioner work?

WHAT IS IT? Dirt Tricks’ automatic KTM cam chain tensioner uses oil pressure, combined with a mechanical ratchet system, to maintain constant pressure on the timing chain (and avoids the possibility of the cam tensioner collapsing during oil pressure fluctuations).

Can timing chains be adjusted?

The simple answer is No, it is not. Timing chain problems are not uncommon, especially in high-mileage vehicles. Like any other moving mechanical component inside any engine, a timing chain is subject to wear. A timing chain is lubricated by the engine oil.

How loose should your timing chain be?

As mentioned, 1/2″ deflection is considered max. A worn timing chain won’t cause a miss not until it’s so worn it jumps a tooth (and then you’ve got a lot more problems than a miss *LOL*).

How do you adjust the ignition timing on a motorcycle?

To dynamically time a motorcycle ignition:

  1. Hook up your timing light as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Remove the points cover.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Aim the timing light through the points plate view hole.
  5. Confirm that the “F” mark aligns with the engine case’s timing mark at idle.

What does a bad cam chain tensioner sound like?

A bad tensioner will usually be accompanied by noise. This noise could be some type of squealing or rattling coming from the timing cover area. Also, when your timing belt is loose, it will cause some drivability issues usually under high load or high rpm.

Can a timing chain be tightened?

Timing chain’s have no tensioner, are made to fit, and cannot be tightened. When a timing chain is stretched too far, you purchase a timing set (chain with matching crankshaft & cam gears, as they MUST be changed together.

How do you adjust the cam chain on a motorcycle?

That is, with no tension placed on the Cam Chain. You do this by removing the spring from the end of the adjuster shaft, releasing the one way lock, if there is one, and push the adjuster shaft to it’s loosest postion or by pushing the adjuster shaft, under spring pressure, in and locking it with the adjuster pinch bolt.

When to replace the cam chain on a Honda 350cc?

The early Honda 350cc twins had a tensioner controled by oil pressure. Check your shop manual. If the Cam Chain is real noisy and the noise does not go away when you adjust it, the Cam Chain is worn out and needs to be replaced. Just like with the rear drive chain and sprockets, the Cam Chain sprockets should be replaced too.

How does a pinch bolt work on a cam chain?

These have a pinch bolt that locks the adjuster shaft in position. As the Cam Chain wears (Stretches) it makes more noise. You usually have to set the engine to some kind of mark on the flywheel. This moves all the Cam Chain slack to where the adjuster is. Then loosen the pinch bolt on the adjuster.

What kind of cam chain adjuster do I Need?

When we install the cams and time them we have one last thing to do, adjust the tension on the cam chain. There are only two types of cam chain adjusters. Manual adjustment. Automatic adjustment. Manual Adjuster. Automatic Adjuster. Both types have one thing in common. You must install them in the completely off (Loosest) position.
