Although they can’t purr, lions do have the equivalent (or, in the case of some other big cats, the equivalent of a chuff.

What does it mean when a mountain lion chirps?

Mountain lions actually have a variety of vocalizations. This mountain lion’s chirping is apparently a sound that mothers and their young use to locate one another. You can hear it continue to chirp or squeak as it moves out of the picture frame and walks further away from the camera.

Do mountain lions walk with their claws out?

Mountain lions, however, have claws that are retractable, as do all felines. These claws are not usually unsheathed and so they rarely show in tracks. They do occasionally show when tracks are in deep substrates, such as mud or snow.

How do you know if a mountain lion is near?

If a cougar is in the area and you are lucky enough to detect its presence, most often it will be due to “cougar sign” and not actually seeing the animal. These signs are evidence left behind after a cougar has passed through. Cougar signs include tracks, scat, scratches and cached (partially buried) prey.

Do mountain lions roar or purr?

Mountain lions make little noise in the woods. When they do, they often sound like a person whistling or a bird chirping. When they growl, they sound like an overgrown house cat.

Cougar footprints are easily distinguished from bobcat prints because they are large, measuring up to 4 inches wide and 3 1/3 inches long.

Should I be scared of mountain lions?

One of my most asked questions is “do I have to worry about mountain lions when I hike?” The answer is no and yes. 99.99999% of the time, mountain lions keep their distance from humans and avoid hikers. But it makes sense to be aware of them and their behavior, and be prepared for anything that could occur.
